 "My trip to Colorado" 2009-07-14
By Thomas Reeder (Phx AZ.)
I just got back from a 10 day trip from Phx. Az. to Den. Colo. I used the highland bar top carrier to haul about 100 lbs. of my camping stuff. I took some gray plastic PVC pipe cut to the length of my cloth carrier and notched it so my carrier bag would sit on and be able to clamp to something. I also cut a piece of 1/4 plywood to fit inside my carrier to make it more sturdy. All in all it worked great until it rained and a small amt. of H2O leaked in my car. Other than that no probs.

I was very pleased with the Highland bar carrier. It was easy to install and withstood a long trip from Michigan to North Dakota.

 "Flimsy and non-durable" 2009-06-21
By F. Saab
The bars have very thin walls and cannot support any kind of load. The plastic towers are flimsy and crack or split within a few uses, so the bars are not secured. The tower feet are not attached and do not stay on when the racks are removed. The strap tightening hardware develops rust within a couple of weeks. This is a shoddily designed and contructed product. Not worth the money.

"mail, manufacturer, & cavalier problems..." 2009-06-03
By D. Bryson
This is as basic a carrier as you can imagine... two hollow metal bars, four plastic feet with rubbers, four nuts and bolts to fasten the feet onto the bars, and four vinyl straps with rubber coated metal hooks to grab the roof edge of the car. I used one of these bars to strap a vinyl luggage pack to the top of my car and it worked fine from Texas through the Rockies into Oregon.

I gave it 2 stars because... the metal clips that grab onto the edge of the roof interrupted the weather seal causing water to leak into the car, plus wind noise (Cavalier owners Beware). I had to send my first order back because the box ripped open and most parts were lost in the mail, when I received my second order all parts were in the box and was undamaged...but, as I easily assembled the feet onto the bars (three holes to choose from to slide the bolts through on each end), The holes on one end did not line up with the holes on the other end. Can you imagine the feet faced in two different directions?! What numb-nut did that? I ended up drilling an extra hole. I DID NOT give it one star because it did its job... I will continue to use it, but not in the rain or on long trips.

 "Good value" 2009-04-10
By Dagger Magellan (Mesa, AZ)
I recently purchased a used 16.5 foot sea kayak. The seller threw in a pair of Yakima kayak saddles, which are meant to slip onto 1" bar carriers. I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a Yakima rack. I needed to figure out how to adapt the saddles to a rack system and mount to my Dodge Dakota with fiberglass camper shell. I went to several stores and couldn't find anything close to the Highland bars, so I bought a set. With a little improvisation I have carried my 60-pound kayak at up to 65mph with no problems.

On a test mount, I noticed that the rubber feet tended to slip from side to side easily. I bought some rubber weave kitchen shelf liner, cut four pieces about 1" wider than the feet and stuck them on the pads with double-sided carpet tape. They don't slide around quite as much now. What everybody says about the rubber pads is true. I duct taped (thanks Red Green) mine on so I could remove them later if required. The rain gutter hooks are useless in my application. I have a crew cab truck, so for the front mount, which is on the cab, I just run the straps in through the little vent windows and run a cam strap through that hooks to both loops. The rear mount goes on the camper shell. I installed 5/16" eyebolts up inside the rear wheel wheels and run the same type of hooked cam straps down. To keep the paint on the camper from getting scratched, I removed the upper hooks, and threaded the black carrier straps through the remaining loops. Very simple installation. The ¾" straps and buckles that come with the rack might be a little on the flimsy side, I tied a knot through the end to keep them from loosening and slipping through the buckles. Since this is a temporary mounted rack, I also run 1" straps from the boat's bow and stern to the bumpers, just as a little insurance to keep the rack from shifting around. I've uploaded three photographs to the Customer Images area.

All in all a good value. I would recommend the Highland system to any kayaker.

 "Lacking one important feature" 2009-06-10
By P. Hancock (Canada)
I purchased this bag recently as an alternative to my Thule hardshell cargo box for short weekend trips to the lake.

After driving home on the first weekend of use in rain I was surprised to find at least 2 cups of water in the interior of the bag and my items completely soaked. Before the next trip I sprayed the entire bag with heavy canvas waterproofing spray. This had no effect other than to discolor the outside of the bag slightly. My contents are still soaked if I encounter rain. And I have followed the mounting instructions correctly by the way!

Part of the problem with this bag is the seams are poorly sewed. If I look into the bag when it's on my rooftop I can see the light coming in from the front corner seams. Obviously water is getting in at these seams. My next attempt will be to tape up the seams and see if that helps.

Overall I can't recommend this bag based on the significant amount of water that accumulates inside. The manufacturers rating of water resistant is completely misleading. I did not assume that this bag would be completely dry inside when driving in rain but comeon, how useful is a bag that fills with a significant amount of water.

"TOOK IT CROSS COUNTRY...BOSTON TO CALIFORNIA" 2009-06-10
By M. Dong (Somerville, MA United States)
We bought the 846 at Target on sale. We were moving across the country from Boston MA to Davis CA and read the reviews on Amazon. We decided to take a chance. The reviews and instructions were helpful. We packed everything in plastic bags and there was more than enough left over for more. If you can, buy some ratchet straps and tie it down for extra security and to prevent any possible flapping if the unit isnt full.

During our trip we encountered a day or two with heavier rain and hail; the floor of the unit was damp but we expected this from reading the Amazon reviews.

We checked our 846 often and had to tighten the straps and ratchet straps on occasion but that was to be expected for such a long trip. I would definately recommend this product if you are taking it on any type of trip...if you dont mind drying it out and sponge cleaning it at the end of your trip.

"Last minute bag, not weather proof but great bag" 2009-05-11
By B. Sopkowiak
We found out last minute we needed an extra bag to fit everything in on the way home from vacation. We found everything we wanted online (a lot cheaper online then figured) we couldn't get anything on time for the trip. We ended up at sports authority and found the bag for I believe $80. Not a bad price, we checked the hard top carriers and they were all over priced like $300 or more. It was easy to install and we fit 4 black garbage bags full of clothes in the bag. It did make wind noise with the straps, although we were going 90 on the interstate. But we got used to the sound and just fixed them everytime we had to stop. The clothes were damp inside the carrier once we did make it home, but we also went through a ton of rain, a blizzard and strong wind. I would except that to happen. We drove 1,500 miles and it was totally worth the money to save room in the car.

 "1300 miles, no problems" 2009-01-29
By Emily J. Cayer (Alliance, NE United States)
We purchased this bag for a 1300 mile drive from eastern Tennessee to western Nebraska. We drove through a snow/sleet storm and although some moisture penetrated the bag, all went well, just remember to put everything in garbage bags and you'll be fine. For [...] bucks, I can't think of a better way to strap luggage to the roof of your car.

 "Recommended" 2009-01-08
By Brad McCool (New Vienna, OH USA)
We are a family of five and travel from mid-Ohio to mid-Kansas semi-annually in a Ford Windstar. Due to the kids getting older and bigger we needed more room in the van. After looking at several different toppers I decided to try this one. I am very pleased with it and would recommend it to anyone needing extra space in their vehicle. This past holiday season we made our trip to Kansas with this carrier attached to the top, which by the way is very easy to do. We traveled through freezing temperatures, rain, and wind. Upon arrival there was a little water inside the carrier but because the instructions highly recommended putting items in plastic bags, which we did, nothing got wet. The carrier remained secure through the headwinds, crosswinds, and even the sudden gusts of wind produced by passing trucks.

If I ever have to buy another carrier, it will be this one.

"Great roof bag, and you don't need a roof rack!" 2009-07-29
By Summer Jordre (Oregon)
We bought this to clear up some room in my Tuscon when we go on long trips. It works great! No slipping and stays in place. I have yet to see if it will hold up in the rain, I hope it does. I love this product. It holds a lot and you don't need a roof rack to use it.

"Great Roof Top Bag for the Money" 2009-07-19
By Richard Nelson (MA)
This bag goes on and off easy! The bag zips open on three sides so the top folds back. you put the bags on fold the top back over, zip it up and attach the straps to the car. we went through an extremely heavy rain and the suitcase at the front did get a little wet. Next time I would put the suitcases in contractor trash bags before putting them in the roof top bag. For the amount of times I'll need to use a rooftop bag, I didn't see any reason to spend hundreds of dollars on a waterproof one.

This product is so easy to use that I wouldn't hesitate to put things on the roof and save the room in the car.

"Great but watch out for rain!!" 2009-07-18
By Samuel Blair (Gibsonia, PA)
We purchased this for a trip to NJ for our 2000 CRV. It doesn't have a roof rack and this bag pretty much fit the bill but experience is a great teacher!!

PRO: Large enough for a stroller, beach toys, a quilt, & chairs with room left over. Easy to pack and easy to store which was a major selling point for me. Installation is pretty easy but if there's the slightest chance of rain DO NOT install it by clipping to the interior of you vehicle (read below). When it did rain, the stuff in the bag remained quite dry - not bone dry, but not enough to worry about. If you have items that you want to remain perfectly dry (sleeping bags) put them in garbage bags as others suggest. Stays in place well during travel and I didn't notice any noise after I taped the strap ends.

CON: I installed the bag by bringing the straps through to the interior grab handles above the rear doors, which is what the manual suggests. I used a bungee to connect one set of straps as we didn't have 4 handles. This worked perfectly for the 10 hour drive there. However one day it rained like crazy. I went out at the end of the next day, which was bright and sunny, to get something out of the car. The interior windows were heavily fogged over and when I opened the door I got hit with the biggest wave of funky air ever. There was about an inch of standing water on the floor and water had also saturated the rear seats. The windows were not down but the bag was still in place. Here the capillary action of the straps drew the rain water INSIDE the car even though it was sealed up tight. I ran into a similar problem on the way home and had to readjust the installation under an overpass. I moved the clips from the over-door grab handles and put the L-shaped clips on the upper door frames themselves. With the doors closed and the straps tight the bag didn't move though I was worried for a while. With this method there's also the possibility for paint wearing off where the clips are, but I didn't have that problem.

A second problem was that even after one trip the interior vinyl waterproofing was wearing out. A couple bumper stickers to the wear spots will probably fix that enough though.

I'd still buy this but install it other than how they direct you.

"Excellent quality - but haven't used yet" 2009-07-04
By K. Schmidt (New York)
I haven't used it yet -- I'll update my review after I do -- but I have it opened on the floor slowly being filled with clothes while awaiting a long trip. It seems very well-made and designed and the botton is soft so as to not harm the car's roof finish. I'll let you know.

 "Great bag for camping" 2009-06-30
By J. Boeder (San Leandro, CA)
I purchased this a few months ago and I finally got to use it over the weekend. We go on many camping trips and my Explorer does not have enough room for all the equipment and five people so I needed more room. I am tired of havign other people take my stuff up in there cars. I own all the equipment and everyone just camps with us. After loading my car and the bag we headed to Bass Lake. We drove for over four hours and when we arrived the bag was still in place and never moved. It also did not make any noise. We left it on top of the car the entire time and it made it through yosemite twice as well as the long drive home. So in four days it lasted 16 hours on top of the car in the heat. No rips or tears or any detaching. I say it is well built!!! Cant wait to use it again
