"Looks better than others but had to struggle a bit to mount it" 2009-04-12
By Vikram Rawat (carlsbad, ca)
Had to struggle a little bit to put it on my car (Honda Accord 2005, 4dr, LX).

My system:

400XTR Aero Rapid :

47" Aluminium Aero Bars : I feel these bars look better than the square and round black coated bars.

Thule set of 4 locks :

While the front side installed without much fight, the back side there was some struggle. With the help of a friend we were able to mount the whole rack system in 2 hours. However, before that I had spent 2 hours by myself and gave up. It fits too tight to the car, which is required and good. However, during the installation I felt there was no leeway in the spacing of rubber pads or the base (even a few millimeters). This means everything needs to be in right spots before you start to tighten the screws; otherwise one or other thing will not align later on and you will have to start again.

ex: if you tighten one of the 4 bases first thinking you will adjust the other end, it might not work; or probably later on the locks won't align.

I would recommend a 2 person installation rather than installing alone.

In the end, however the Aluminium bars look good on the car compared to the square or round coated bars.

Ordered the Thule Fit Kit for my 2000 Mercedes E430 Sport. Had a little trouble getting the kit installed w/ the Thule RB47 Rapid Aero Aluminum Roof Rack Load Bars and Thule 400XTR Aero Rapid Roof Rack Foot Pack, it was a bit of a struggle getting the screws locked in, since I was performing the install directly on the car roof. Once I took all the pieces off, connected the fit kit to the load bars and fit kit off of the car and then loaded all the pieces together it worked. I need to buy the Thule skirt so that it blocks out the wind noise while driving. While driving there are no issues - at around 75-80mph I had no issues.

 "Not bad at all" 2008-09-29
By T. King
Installed on a 2007 Audi A4 sedan. Install went smoothly. Rack really looks great, much smoother than most. I also recommend the fairing.

Couple of tips for the DIYers:

1. You don't need to twist the foot handle until you break it when installing. If you bend the metal, you are doing something seriously wrong.

2. When putting the rubber weatherstripping in the load bars (do this after installing the feet and bars to your car), press them into the groove in the middle, then tamp down the ends (leave about 1/4" from the end of the bar clear of the weather stripping), then tamp it down evenly. Otherwise, you'll end up with rubber strip overhang that interferes with being able to put the endcaps on cleanly.

3. If you are putting locks on your rack, you can either punch out the holes in the handles first before putting the feet on the car, or you can punch the blank circles out when it is on top of the vehicle. If you choose the latter, have a pair of needlenose pliers available to fish the blanks out from inside the handles.

4. You need to push the handles in hard to close them after screwing them tight.

5. Attaching the fairing is simple. Assembling the fairing, while simple, is not easy. There is a step when you are required to push the middle anchors onto a clasp that requires significant hand strength. I'm a really big guy, and I found it very difficult. Point is, if you have a local bike shop that you can pay $20-30 for install, it is money well spent.

I like the system. Rackoutfitters had a complete setup for $288, including the load bars and the fit kit. Fairing was extra.

 "Design & Manufacturing Problems" 2007-09-17
By J. Bly (Carson Valley, NV)
Pros: Looks nice, aerodynamic. Cheaper than Yakima.

Cons: Shoddy quality. Cheaper than Yakima.

Used for 17' fiberglass kayaks.

To carry our touring kayaks, we purchased the Thule Aero system for our Prius, because it was significanly cheaper than the Yakima. To work properly, one needs to purchase the correct Fit Kit for the specific vehicle; this Fit Kit is attached to the foot with a plastic-handled bolt. The metal parts in the bolt handles bent during installation, and the cheap rivet holding one of the handles to its bolt sheared in two. There are plastic tabs in the handles that are supposed to fit into a slot on the Fit Kit parts, but 3 out of 4 tabs snapped off. Fortunately, the locks still manage to hold the handles onto the feet. The supplied measurements didn't work for our Prius, and we had to improvise.

Another disadvantage is that the aerodynamic bars need to be parallel with the ground, which doesn't happen if the vehicle's roof is curved (again, think Prius or VW bug.) This doesn't seem like an issue until the accessories are added to the bars, and they wind up tilted and not parallel front-to-rear. Since this results in only a single point of contact on the boat hull, this puts undue strain on the kayaks as well as the fittings holding the attachments to the bar. In this case, a round bar would work perfectly, as one could rotate the accessories until they're parallel and horizontal, supporting the boat across the entire pad. Due to the poor contact with the cradles, the boats are not secure while in the rack, and easily wobble 12" side-to-side. Plus, the amount of pressure needed on the straps to minimally hold the boat in the cradles deforms the hull. Bow/Stern tiedowns are crucial to avoid highway fly-aways.

We've got a Yakima rack on our pickup truck, and it works like a charm. I regret not purchasing a Yakima rack system for the Prius instead of Thule.

If you have a flat-roof vehicle, like a station wagon or SUV, the Thule Aero system would probably work very well for you. Curved roof, think round bars instead.

 "Excellent Product" 2009-08-20
By L. Bertone (Seattle)
The Thule 571 Roof Mount Box Storage Lift is built well and works flawlessly. Read instructions carefully as the precise dimensioning must be followed. There is a little margin, but as an example, the inserts provided are for a cement/concrete application. I found that using large(50 lb) capacity sheet rock anchors, used to hang heavy pictures, worked very well. You can find them at any hardware store. Also prior to starting the installation, layout where your vehicle will be when mounting the roof box, then mark the ceiling with the boxes overall dimensions. This will help when installing the storage lift.

 "overall - good product" 2008-11-18

Overall, good product. The pulleys and winching mechanism are well-constructed. The instructions I thought are very deficient. Be sure you think through your position before drilling holes. The screws they give you are concrete screws - not sure how many of us have concrete garage roofs.

 "Works great, but..." 2008-09-23
By Senor Hotcell (California Bay Area)
After getting this hoist installed on my garage ceiling, I've been happy with its performance. Happy enough, in fact, to buy and install a second one. But it was quite the frustrating experience installing it. My garage has a very high ceiling and is completely finished off so that the overhead studs were difficult to find. The first hoist took me about 5 hours to install. The second one took about half as long, since by then I knew what I was doing and knew where to find the studs. Overall, it's a good product and works well, but allow plenty of time for installation. One last comment: I'm still not sure why this gizmo costs over $100 because it is basically a very simple device and should probably run about $60.

 "Works as advertised" 2008-05-25
By Nathaniel T. Pond (Cincinnati, Ohio United States)
This works like it's supposed to. Holds my 1800 without issue. A few notes though:

1) Get your own mounting screws, the stuff that comes with it is junk

2) I ended up putting up 1x4 supports and mounting everything to those. I didn't put the middle support in, and it doesn't seem to matter.

3) My ceiling is is just over 10' tall, and this only comes down to about eye-level for me (I'm 6' tall). It's enough for me, but you might consider getting a longer rope.

By Caree (MI, USA)
This item was purchased, because I already have 1 Thule upright bike carrier and like it. It is an older style, but similar. The thing that I like about the upright roof carriers is that if someone hits your car from behind, your bikes are not destoyed too. Also, the upright ones are secure and "stay" there, and the front wheels do not have to be taken off and reconnected and brakes readjusted. A lot of bother if wanted to just take the bikes off and ride. I do have to have a little stool to reach my Jeep roof, but it is claspable and stores in my Thule carrier box. So, yes, the Thule box and 2 upright bike carriers fit on a Jeep Cherokee.

Great rack that fits my Volvo V70 removable sport bars. This rack is well built, very easy to operate from the ground. It securely clamps the oversized aluminum tubes of my son's trek. I have noticed a slight decrease in fuel mileage over using a wheel off bike rack.

 "Great item, needs modification" 2007-05-25
By David E. Eves
This bike rack works well once it is mounted. The description of the item did not mention that it needed to be mounted on the Thule roof rack adapter. I ordered only the bike rack. I hoped that the rack would mount directly to my Toyota Rav4's factory roof rack. I've since been looking at other factory roof racks, and have noticed that most of them have airplane wing-like bars which go from side to side. These bars are about three inches in width, and the hardware on the Big Mouth Bike Rack is set up to fit the Thule adapter, which has bars little more than an inch in width. Instead of ordering the adapter, I spent a day tooling my own mounting hardware. This gives the bike rack a much cleaner look, and sets the rack and bike closer to the roof, making it easier to load and unload. The second problem is that the end caps come off much too easily. Other than these problems, the rack works well, and is easy to load and unload.

"Harder to install than other Yakima bike racks" 2009-07-12
By Garrett Schiff (San Diego, CA)
I used to have two Steelhead bike carriers but one was damaged during an unfortunate incident involving roof-mounted bikes and a low parking structure (ouch). I bought the Viper as it seemed like an upgrade, and I must say it's a bit more solidly build than the Steelhead, but there's a few things I don't like.

I don't keep the racks on my truck all the time, only when I'm going biking. Taking off and mounting the Steelhead was basically a clip-on task, and didn't change the skewer length so it was always ready to fit your forks. Putting the Viper on involved completely removing the skewer bolt and re-threading on the lock mechanism from the end, having to thread it on an overly long length of threads. And this is done by having to hold up the lock lever and turn this rough knurled knob that always chafes my fingertips, and it's tough to do because only a small edge of the knob is exposed when you lift up the lever. Then when it's mounted, you have to put your bike up and adjust the threading again to get it to the right width and tension for your bike forks. Taking off involves the reverse unthreading.

I know the different design adds security, but for me it's an annoying extra several minutes and raw fingertips each time.

I just got back from a week camping trip in the Adirondacks with this unit. It hauled my Gary Fisher Kaitai perfectly. I used it backwards so I could have my girlfriends bike and the canoe on top as well. It's easy to use but you must read the instructions so you know how to set it depending on whether or not it's outside the towers. I drove about 450 miles doing around 60-68 mph on winding roads and never had an issue. This rack is good for bikes with disc brakes.

 "nice looking and sturdy." 2008-08-06
By C. Chang (DFW)
pros:

1. Nice looking sleek design.

2. Increased capacity (165lbs) combined with 450R compared with 75lbs with my factory cross bars.

3. Provide wider load space than my factory bars.

4. These has T slots on top going all the way to each side so you can slide your roof rack carriers in and out much easier without totally unscrew the screws; you can't do that with the round or squared load bars.

cons:

1. Easily scrached, everything you put on needs protection (plastic spacers).

2. There is just no good ways to use the rubber strips that are supposed to cover the T slots. If you are likely to rearrange your carriers on the rack it is probably easier just not use these at all.

3. You can't cut these shorter to fit a smaller car, the cross section is not the same all the way through, there are slots at the ends for adapting to the end caps and the foots. I think there are just a few lengths there to choose from.

The custom Q clips made for a really good fit on my 05 Toyota Prius.

You need 2 sets of these `Yakima Q Clip Sets' and the corresponding `Yakima Roundbars Roof Rack Cross Bars' (check your vehicle dimensions for the proper lengths), if you are planning to install a ski rack or any type of enclosure unit. I had these installed professionally for a little bit more money, and it was worth avoiding the hassle. They come with an extra set of keys and are very strong. They are simple and sleek. Definitely a `must have' for a truck owner.

***UPDATE***

My wife and I took our two bikes from our home in suburban Washington, DC to Ocean City, Maryland via Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Total driving time with traffic was about ten hours and about 400 miles. I never went over 65 miles per hour and tried to avoid sharp turns and sudden braking/aceleration. I also stopped at least once per trip to make sure the straps were still tight--which they were. The rack worked like a champion! I am so happy with it--it really does well. I guess I was nervous because it seems the lower base is kind of narrow, but it worked out very well in the end. I've heard that it's not a good idea to leave the rack on your car when not carrying bikes. I wonder what the sun's UV rays do to the straps over time, too. And how would the straps perform if wet? I can't imagine I'd want to try driving to the beach with this rack in the rain, but I cannot say for sure. Over all--solid.

(Original Review Below)

After searching high and low for weeks, I finally found a bike rack that fits my car. I strapped it on this weekend and was able to shake my whole car just by pushing and pulling vigorously on the bike rack itself--the rack didn't budge and the straps remained tight. I'll update my review if I see any problems in the future, but for now my assessment is that the rack is solid.
